Introducing the works of Monet

June 16th, 2010

A new addition to Custom Wines Gallery, we are pleased to feature a select number of paintings by Claude Monet.

Monet, Claude also known as Oscar Claude Monet (14 November 1840 to 5 December 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement’s philosophy of expressing one’s perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.

The term Impressionism is derived from the title of his painting Impression, Sunrise (Impression, soleil levant) painted in 1872. Monet was once asked why he chose the title Impression for the work that became the critical flash point in the first Impressionist exhibition. He answered that he had painted his own impression of the spectacle of a blood red sun cutting through the misty atmosphere rather than a portrait of Le Havre Harbour.
